Land Management

A diverse blend of habitat, history, natural resources and food production

Land Management Practices

The Matfen Estate is managed as a commercial entity but brings together a variety of land management practices. We aim to achieve a balance between productivity and nature.

Our arable operation produces cereals and oilseeds for human and animal consumption while leaving extensive areas of land fallow to provide habitat. Equally our commercial forestry is both productive, providing timber for sawmills as well as chipwood for burning while also being a tremendous living space for flora and fauna.

Our extensive permanent grassland is managed with low intensity allowing us to produce high quality meat with minimal environmental impact while simultaneously providing sources of nectar, pollen, ground cover and a range of other environmental benefits.

In the future we will seek to quantify and enhance the carbon dioxide sequestration functions of our plants and soils.

Farming

Matfen Home Farms is a family business partnership operated by Sir Hugh Blackett, Lady Blackett and their son Henry Blackett.

Forestry

The estate manages the woodland which supplies the chip wood for biomass boilers for Matfen Hall Hotel and Halton Castle.

Environmental

The management of land in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way is paramount to the owners of the Matfen Estate.

“The Estate is continuously evolving to meet the needs of modern estate management and is strongly committed to renewable and sustainable practices.”
